Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland Athletics swap pitchers

On Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays sent hard throwing right-hander Liam Hendriks to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for veteran right-hander Jesse Chavez. The move comes on the same day that the Athletics signed left-hander Rich Hill to a one-year, $6 million contract.

After struggling in different roles between the bullpen and the starting rotation over the first four years of his career, Hendriks finally found himself in 2015. The 26-year-old made 58 appearances for the Blue Jays and went 5-0 with a 2.92 earned run average, 71 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 64 2/3 innings pitched.

However, his inexperience in big situations showed in the American League Championship Series against the Kansas City Royals, when he allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings over two appearances, which was good for a 5.79 ERA.

Chavez, who was used almost exclusively as a relief pitcher over the first six years of his career, making just two starts over that span, spent the last two seasons with the Athletics as a reliever/starter. In 2015, Chavez, 32, went 7-15 with a 4.18 ERA in 30 appearances (26 starts). He struck out 136 and walked 48 over 157 innings pitched, which was 11 more innings than he had ever thrown in his career.

Chavez played with the Blue Jays briefly back in 2012, appearing in nine games before being dealt to the Athletics in exchange for cash considerations.

For the Blue Jays, the move is more of a short-term solution, as Chavez is eligible for arbitration after the 2016 season and can become a free agent. Meanwhile, Hendriks still has four years of control, as he is not set to become a free agent until 2020, adding long-term possibilities to the move for the Athletics.
